Arundinaria anceps (Yushania anceps):  Bamboo with small narrow leaves that hang on  glossy green arching canes, very graceful looking ideal in a pot or in the border grows to approx 10ft.  Will tolerate heavy shade.

 

Arundinaria murielae (Fargesia murielae):  This bamboo grows into a thick clump, new culms are grey very attractive, leaves are narrow, this bamboo is happy to grow in shade in a pot or in the ground it is very frost hardy, grows to approx 8ft.

 

Arundinaria nitida (Fargesia nitida) :  Narrow foliage that hangs on slender purple flushed arching canes, a dainty bamboo grows to approx 10ft in a dense clump.  Suitable for a shady site and very frost hardy.

 

Bambusa multiplex  ‘Elegans’:  This is a small compact bamboo with graceful small leaves on slender culms, grows to approx 3ft ideal in a pot but prefers a sheltered site, can be grown indoors.

 

Bambusa multiplex ‘Alphons Karr’:  An unusual bamboo with decorative canes that are pink at first then turn bright orange-yellow with fine green stripes between the nodes.  Grows to approx 12ft in a clump, ideal for growing in a large pot, can be grown indoors.

 

Bambusa multiplex ‘Golden Goddess’: This bamboo grows into a dense clump, with light soft green foliage, grows to approx 12ft ideal in a pot, prefers a sheltered site, can be grown indoors.

 

Bambusa ventricosa:  Buddha’s Belly Bamboo – can grow to a height of more than 30ft, but under certain conditions, during culm growth the internodes bulge becoming an ornamental asset and reduce the height of the plant.  Will grow in many conditions except excess water, ideal as a specimen clump in a sheltered site or in a pot in a conservatory.

 

Chimonobambusa hookeriana: A compact clump forming bamboo with dark green slender canes and attractive hanging foliage, grows to approx 10ft. Very decorative ideal as a specimen clump or in a pot, tolerates shade well.

 

Chimonobambusa marmorea:  This bamboo has many bright green leaves, new culms are covered in a marbled sheath, the culms become red in autumn, prefers fertile soil and a semi shaded position, grows in a clump to approx 6ft ideal for a pot or hedge

 

Chimonobambusa quadrangularis:  This is a highly ornamental bamboo with square sectional culms. It grows in a clump in a columnar habit, its foliage is waterfall-like with long lustrous leaves, grows to approx 12ft ideal as a specimen plant or in a pot.  It will tolerate a shady position.

 

 

 

Chimonobambusa tumidissinoda (Quiongzhuea tumidissinoda): An ornamental bamboo with fine green canes becoming darker with age and having prominent bulged nodes, the foliage is fine and glossy.  It  has a fountain-like habit to a height of approx 15ft, will grow in a pot or as a specimen clump.

 

Chusquea couleou:  Excellent specimen plant, this bamboo has fast upright growth with thick yellow-green culms and it is very hardy, clump forming growing to approx 10ft, the dense foliage is distinctive, looking like bottle-brushes, with small blue-green leaves.

 

Fargesia murielae ‘Simba’ :   Slow running type bamboo, grows to approx 4ft, soft green foliage on supple canes, ideal as a ground cover or a pot plant, will grow in any soil or position.

 

Fargesia robusta :  This bamboo is attractive with tall very slender straight green culms and many dainty glossy hanging leaves, it grows in a clump to approx 12ft and is very ornamental.

 

Fargesia rufa :  An elegant bamboo with fine culms which are yellow-green when new and covered in pink sheaths, the foliage is small glossy and compact, this bamboo is ideal for growing in a pot and will tolerate shade, it is very hardy grows to approx 10ft.

 

Hibanobambusa tranquillans  ‘Shiroshima’:  Large leaves strongly variegated dark green and creamy white, grows into a clump with a bushy habit to a height of approx 8ft, ideal for a pot or to grow in an isolated clump. Vigorous given right conditions

Phyllostachys arcana ‘Luteosulcata’ : Ornamental bamboo with thick green culms with bright golden yellow streaks in-between the nodes, has an upright  habit and dense foliage, grows to approx 20ft an excellent specimen plant.

 

Phyllostachys aurea:  Fishpole or Golden Bamboo - Clump forming bamboo with an upright habit, the light green culms turn yellow when exposed to the sun, grows  to a height of approx 20ft is very frost hardy, its dense foliage makes it ideal to use as a screen.

 

Phyllostachys aurea ‘Flavescens Inversa’: Similar to Phyllostachys aurea, the culms are green but have a wide bright yellow streak in-between the nodes, upright growth to approx 20ft,  an unusual and attractive specimen plant.  Prefers partial shade.

 

Phyllostachys aurea ‘Koi’:  Identical to Phyllostachys aurea except for the colour of its culms, which are yellow, internodes have a highly decorative green stripe and the culms become knobbly. Quite unusual and distinctive.  Prefers partial shade.

 

 

 

Phyllostachys aureosulcata :   Bamboo with culms that zig zag at the base and  are green with a golden stripe between nodes, this bamboo will grow to a height of approx 25ft and it prefers a site sheltered from the wind.  Very ornamental for use as a hedge or as an isolated clump.

 

Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Aureocaulis’ :  Very hardy bamboo which  has creamy yellow culms, clump forming prefers a site sheltered from the wind will grow to a height of approx 15ft.

 

Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Spectabilis’ :  Highly ornamental bamboo, glossy foliage on yellow culms with green streaks between nodes, the new growth turns deep purple when exposed to the sun, ideal for use as a hedge or an isolated clump or in a pot, prefers a site sheltered from the wind will grow to a height of approx 15ft.

 

Phyllostachys bambusoides ‘Castillonis’: Stunning bamboo with dark green and fine cream variegated foliage on bright golden yellow culms with dark green streaks between nodes.  Ideal as a specimen plant in rich soil, also suitable as a striking hedge or screen, grows to a height of approx 20ft.

 

Phyllostachys bambusoides ‘Holochrysa’ :  Distinctive orange-yellow culms with dark green glossy foliage, ideal as a specimen plant or a windbreak or screen will grow to approx 20ft and prefers full sun to colour the culms brighter.  Very ornamental.

 

Phyllostachys bambusoides ‘Tanakae’ : Attractive green culms with round brown blotches with age, glossy green dense foliage.  Can grow to approx 20ft  very unusual.

 

Phyllostachys bambusoides bissetii :  This is a beautiful  bamboo which is vigorous and  frost hardy, it has shiny dark green culms with dense foliage making it ideal for use as a hedge or a screen, grows to a height of approx 20ft and will grow in any site.

 

Phyllostachys bambusoides lacrima-deae : Upright habit of growth with green canes covered in  brown blotches and glossy dark green dense foliage.  Similar to Phyllostachys nigra ‘Boryana’ but will not grow as tall, only to approx  15ft.  Grow as a specimen clump or in a large pot.

 

Phyllostachys decora (Phyllostachys mannii) :  Graceful hanging foliage on supple green erect canes which turn yellow when exposed to the sun, very vigourous grows well in all places to a height of approx 20ft ideal as a screen, this is a very attractive  looking bamboo.

 

Phyllostachys glauca :  Very dense glossy foliage on  arching culms which are covered in white powder giving them an attractive blue colour when young.  It will grow into a dense hedge or an isolated clump to approx 25ft.

 

Phyllostachys heteroclada :  Bamboo with very dense foliage, will withstand moist conditions and thrives in places other bamboos wouldn’t, will grow in any type of soil to a height of approx 15ft, ideal as a windbreak or a hedge.

 

Phyllostachys humilis :  Very leafy dense foliage makes this bamboo useful for providing a hedge or screen.  Young culms are very dark, turning orange-yellow in the sun with age,  will grow to approx 15ft in any conditions but it can be vigourous.

 

Phyllostachys nigra :  Black Bamboo – This is always very popular, a bamboo with new green culms that turn black with age and sunlight, it has dark green shiny foliage and forms a dense clump growing to a height of approx 15ft.  It prefers to be sheltered from the wind and is ideal to grow as a specimen clump or in a pot.

 

Phyllostachys nigra ‘Boryana’ : Attractive bamboo with green culms that become glossy and blotched brown with age, arching habit of growth and clump forming with dense foliage. Can grow to 20ft, ideal as a specimen in a pot or in open ground.

 

Phyllostachys nigra ‘Henonis’ :   Stiff erect culms soft green at first, changing to yellow or blue-green with sun exposure, the leaves are small becoming darker with age.  This is an elegant bamboo growing to approx 20ft, it is very hardy with a good resistance to dryness, ideal for a hedge or as a specimen clump.

 

Phyllostachys praecox :  Dark green foliage on upright growing yellow-green culms, ideal as a specimen in a large pot or a clump in open ground.  Can grow to approx 25ft, fully hardy in any site.

 

Phyllostachys pubescens ‘Mazel’ : A giant majestic bamboo with new growth which is covered in white powder turning blue-green with age. The foliage is dense and pale green.  Fully hardy prefers rich soil and can reach a height of approx 30ft, very ornamental and collectable an ideal specimen.

 

Phyllostachys sulfurea:  This beautiful graceful bamboo has large light green culms turning yellow with age and having dark green bands between nodes.  Can grow to approx 30ft, prefers a sunny site.

 

Phyllostachys violascens : This bamboo has new culms which are deep violet, almost black turning brown, then with age having yellow-green stripes becoming dark purple. It can be invasive when established, but by removing the old canes once the new ones emerge reduces the bamboos energy.

 

Phyllostachys viridiglaucescens :  Very hardy bamboo with straight erect culms and long dark green leaves which are blue-green underneath.  Dislikes poor soil, ideal as a specimen clump or a hedge, can grow to 25ft.

 

Phyllostachys vivax :  This species is the most cold resistant of the large bamboo, it is fast growing and can grow to more than 30ft, the narrow foliage hangs on fine green culms, ideal as a specimen plant in open ground.

 

Phyllostachys vivax ‘Huanwenzhu’ :  Dark green foliage on mid green culms with a golden streak between nodes, grows into a clump, ideal as a specimen plant  in a pot or planted in the border. Grows to approx 15ft in a sunny or shaded site.

 

Pleioblastus chino ‘Elegantissima’ :  Dark green and bright creamy-white variegated foliage, fine culms forming a dense clump, very elegant, growing well in any reasonable site to approx 2ft, ideal for a pot or as a small hedge.

 

Pleioblastus distichus :  A compact dwarf bamboo with small bright green foliage, it is suitable for all conditions but will grow best in sun or semi-shade. Ideal for a pot or use as groundcover providing plants are planted close together.  Grows to approx 2ft.

 

Pleioblastus fortunei ‘Variegata’ :  Very dense bright green and white variegated foliage making a dense thicket.  Very hardy ideal for use in a border or pot or to stabilize banks.  Prefers a sunny site.  Grows to approx 1ft. Best if trimmed annually to promote fresh growth.

 

Pleioblastus hindsii :  A very stately  erect growing bamboo with long wide dark green foliage, ideal for use as a hedge or windbreak or isolated clump.  Grows to  approx 15ft

 

Pleioblastus linearis :  This bamboo has long fine  foliage on supple culms making it very ornamental, it has a compact habit of growth and will grow to a height of approx 12ft in a dense clump in open ground or in a pot. Tolerates shade well

 

Pleioblastus shibuyanus ‘Tsuboi’ :  This bamboo has fine erect culms bearing decorative green and creamy white dense foliage, grows to approx  5ft ideal for a pot or in a border.

 

Pleioblastus viridistriatus (Pleioblastus auricomus) :  A very attractive bamboo with  green and gold variegated  leaves on dark purple-green canes, plant in full sun for the best colour, and trim annually to encourage fresh bright growth.  Will grow to a height of approx 6ft  ideal for use as undergrowth or in a pot or border.

 

Pleioblastus viridistriatus ‘Chrysophyllus’ :  Low growing spreading bamboo with bright yellow foliage turning green with age.  Prefers a sunny site in a pot or open ground will grow to approx 3ft.

 

Pseudosasa japonica :  An attractive bamboo with long broad leaves making dense foliage on straight culms, very hardy grows to approx 12ft ideal as a specimen in a pot or for use as a windbreak or screen can also be grown indoors.

 

Pseudosasa japonica ‘Akebono suji’: An upright growing bamboo with large striped creamy white and green leaves on stout culms, will tolerate a shady position, grows to approx 12ft an unusual and attractive clump forming specimen bamboo.

 

Pseudosasa japonica ‘Tsutsumiana’ :  Highly ornamental  bamboo with  green culms that have an internodal bulge and soft foliage, grows to approx 15ft and prefers a shady site  in a pot or as a specimen clump in open ground.

 

Pseudosasa viridula :  Very dense dark green foliage which is striking in winter on green culms grows to approx 15ft fully hardy ideal as a screen or in a pot

 

Sasa kurilensis :  Bamboo with broad leathery leaves growing on stout culms  to approx 6ft spreads evenly forming a dense thicket.

 

Sasa masamuneana ‘Albostriata’ :  A dwarf  bamboo with bright cream and green variegated dense foliage, grows to approx 3ft very ornamental in a border or pot.

 

Sasa palmata‘Nebulosa’ :  Fine green culms becoming brown with age and very long wide glossy leaves, grows well in all conditions to a height of approx 10ft.  Attractive as a clump or as a hedge.

 

Sasa tessellata (Indocalamus tessellatus):  A bamboo with very large glossy leaves up to 50cm long that hang on fine culms in a clump with an arching habit.  Will grow in any position up to a height of approx 5ft. Slow growing.

 

Sasa veitchii :  A beautiful  bamboo with deep purple culms and long broad dark green leaves that in winter have a creamy margin.  Grows well in any soils but can become invasive, ideal as a hedge or bank stabilizer grows to a height of approx 4ft.

 

Sasaella ramosa (Sasa vagans):  Small narrow mid-green leaves on green culms, grows to approx 3ft. Can be invasive once established so excellent ground cover, or good in a pot.

 

Semiarundinaria fastuosa :  Stately upright straight culms and dense glossy foliage ideal as a screen or windbreak.  The culms become purple with sun exposure and grow in a dense clump, will grow in any conditions to a height of approx 20ft.

 

Semiarundinaria kagamiana :  Quite a vigourous bamboo with fine green culms becoming brown with age, it has a bushy shape with small straight leaves, very hardy and will grow in all conditions.  Ideal as a hedge,  can grow to approx 25ft.

 

Semiarundinaria yashadake ‘Kimmei’ :  A colourful  bamboo with soft green foliage on culms that are cream and green when young, turning yellow with a green stripe in the summer and dark red in autumn making this bamboo highly ornamental all year round.  Grows to approx 15ft  ideal in a pot or as a specimen clump or an unusual hedge.

Shibataea kumasasa :  Low growing clump forming bamboo with short wide dark green leaves making dense foliage on supple culms. Prefers full sun and shelter from cold wind, grows to approx 4ft makes a good low hedge and can be trimmed to shape.

 

Sinobambusa rubroligula :  A graceful bamboo with yellow-green culms that turn red when exposed to sunlight.  Grows to approx 15ft, with  mid-green foliage. This bamboo is quite unusual and would make an ideal specimen plant in a pot or as an isolated clump.
